ONIRIS is a higher education and research institute who are very active in the food science and food processing industry. ONIRIS was established from the merger in 2010 of the National Veterinary School of Nantes and the ‘Ecole Nationale d’Ingénieurs des Techniques des Industries Agro-Alimentaires’.

Our institute was created by the French Ministry of Agriculture to train students in food processes, and especially in refrigeration processes. Nowadays, ONIRIS is still performing research in this field.

The laboratory GEPEA (Process Engineering for Environment and Food) is a joint research unit of the CNRS (UMR CNRS 6144) recognized as one of 3 national leaders in process engineering. We have developed a long experience in freezing processes and are involved in national and European projects like SAFE ICE or FREEZEWAVE dedicated to freezing under electromagnetic disturbances. Refrigeration is in our ‘DNA’ and in 1998, we  helped organise a symposium of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR Congress, Commissions C2, E1 with D2/3).

AFF (Association Française du Froid) is the French Association of Refrigeration

AFF missions:

  • Bring the voice of the cold chain actors to the public authorities, in order to defend and promote refrigeration and its uses,
  • Provide a place for technical and scientific exchanges for professionals and users of cold technologies,
  • Develop the science, technology, quality, efficiency and effectiveness of refrigeration and air conditioning,
AFF values: Science, technology, innovation, independence, impartiality, sharing.
